Some Multi Level Marketing Statistics

by Jesse Miller on January 5, 2010

There are a number of interesting and amazing multi-level marketing statistics. Some are sure to surprise you and give you hope that maybe a better life lies ahead. Perhaps, all you ever heard of multi-level marketing is that it is one big scam. But to show you that MLM is indeed a vibrant community of hard working people out there earning an honest day’s work, we will talk about some success stories and some of the everyday stuff that is happening in the world of multi-level marketing.

• According to the DSA or the Direct Selling Association, multi-level marketing is a major money maker. In 2008, about 29.6 billion dollars were made in sales, lead by the states of the American South (35.1 percent).
• Approximately 74 percent of all Americans have bought products sold to them by MLM agents.
• Worldwide, direct selling accounted for 114 billion dollars in sales in 2007.
• The most sellable items by category were home and family care products followed by wellness and personal care. Together, these three top categories contributed to almost 70 percent of the 29.6 dollars that was made.

Selling remotely, where there is no face to face contact between the seller and the buyer only made 20.7 percent of total sales. This is surprising considering the explosion of the internet and e-commerce. Almost 12 percent of sales could be attributed to e-commerce. The most effective form of selling is still face to face selling where the seller and potential buyer meet in their homes. Almost 72 percent of all direct sales were made in this manner.

It is not surprising then that the most effective sales strategy is still person-to person selling. Approximately 66 percent of all sales were made in this manner followed by group or party selling which contributed to more than a quarter of all salers.

Multi-level marketing companies were the dominant sellers grabbing more than 96 percent of the 29.6 billion in sales in 2008.

The trade association of companies that engage in direct selling and multi-level marketing is the DSA. You might be surprised that this organization is 100 years old already.

Familiar corporate names engage in direct selling or multi level marketing. In the United States, such names include Avon, Amway, Herbalife, and Tupperware.

Most of the people (91 percent) working as agents of multi-level marketing companies are part timers. They do less than 30 hours a week.

Female multi-level marketing agents far outnumber men. The ratio is approximately 8 women for every man.

About 15 million people are employed in direct selling.

Thousands of years ago, people were already selling their wares on the street. They would approach potential buyers and engage them in a conversation about the merits of the products they are selling. This is direct selling and it hasn’t basically changed today.

Multi-level marketing is one of the few endeavors where absolutely no start-up money is required in order to start a business. All the important skills will be taught to you by the parent company so education is not even that important. What is very important in MLM is the willingness to talk to strangers.
